Sand for playgrounds

EU sand vid klätterställning

Shock-absorbing playground sand

In order to reduce the incidence of severe injuries that take place in children’s playgrounds, especially head injuries associated with falls, the EU has created a standard to assess and set requirements on the shock absorption capacity of surfaces onto which children fall from playground facilities. Mainly, this means that the sand should be washed in order not to form lumps, which reduces the impact if a child falls off a playground facility. To meet these EU requirements, Rådasand has produced its EU sand.

The shock-absorbing EU sand cannot be shaped and used to create sandcastles, for instance. For this, Rådasand can supply another type of play sand which can be placed in a separate sandbox if the children want to mould the sand or make sandcastles.

Rådasand’s EU sand is tested by the SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden. On the basis of this test, we can exactly dimension the thickness of the sand layer which is needed to reduce the risk of injuries with regard to the highest fall height for the playground in question.

Rådasand’s EU sand is washed and has no granules smaller than 0.2 mm. This means that the sand does not generate dust and has a very little tendency to become compacted, enabling the sand’s functionality to remain.

Rådasand’s EU sand is rounded by nature and has a granular size up to max 1.2 mm which considerably reduces the risk of abrasions or other surface wounds when children fall from a height or fall on the ground while playing.

Play sand for sandboxes

If the children want to play with the sand and shape it as they like, Rådasand can supply play sand for sandboxes. This sand can preferably also be used for many different purposes, such as cultivation in sand beds, land adjustment in lawns, drainage sand in flower borders or flowerboxes or as way sand for tiling.
